Getting Older Is No Reason To Shrink Your Style: Try Expanding It!

Woman Shopping To Expand Her Wardrobe: Wear What The FUNK you want

Getting Older Is No Reason To Shrink Your Style: Try Expanding It!

I say that with all the sincerity of someone who has lived through seasons of trying to tone my style, blend in, or wear what I thought was “appropriate.” Basically wearing what I thought was the style for this 50 something phase in my life.

And you know what all that shrinking did for me? Absolutely nothing. It didn’t make me feel more confident or blended in with my peers.

It didn’t make me feel more like myself. If anything, it dimmed the joy I used to feel when I put on something that made me feel good in my own style.

I think a lot of us have been taught somewhere along the way that aging means we should step back, make less of a statement, or somehow fade into the background. We’re told that certain colors are “too loud,” certain hemlines are “too young looking,” or certain fabrics are “too much” for a woman past a certain birthday. #lol

But the truth is, none of that matters. Style doesn’t come with an expiration date and I truly believe that. If anything, the older we get, the more freedom we have to wear what feels honest and true to ourselves.

Imagine how it would feel to open your closet tomorrow and reach for the thing you’ve been saving for “the right occasion.” Maybe it’s that bright dress you keep pushing to the side. Girl, pull that dress out that closet!

Maybe it’s the funky pair of shoes you thought you were too old to wear. Put that ‘ish on darling!

what's in my closet : Wear What The FUNK you want

What if you stopped saving those clothing and just decided today is the right occasion? Because it isand you know I am right.

I know it can feel scary to expand your style when the world keeps whispering that you should stick to safe choices especially after 50 something. I’ve had those days, too. Days when I’ve stood in front of the mirror, second-guessing whether people would stare if I wore the jacket I loved or the necklace that felt a little bolder than usual. No seriously, women would ask me, if my necklaces were too heavy or my heels to high?

And you know what I’ve learned? People will always have opinions. But the only opinion that matters is the one you hear when you look in the mirror and ask yourself, “Do I feel like me today?”

When you expand your style, you’re not just putting on a new outfit. You’re giving yourself permission to keep growing, to keep discovering, to keep surprising yourself. You’re telling the world that you’re not finished becoming who you are meant to be. And that message is powerful at any age. Especially as we age!

Think about all the women you admire. Chances are, you don’t love them because they played it safe. You love them because they showed up fully, wearing what lit them up inside. They dared to be visible. They dared to express something real. And that same courage lives in you. It doesn’t matter if you’re forty, fifty, sixty, or beyond. Every year you’ve lived has given you more wisdom and more stories to tell through what you wear.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to try something new, this is it. Buy the dress that makes you smile. Try the pattern you’ve always been curious about. Wear the shoes that feel a little bit wild and funky. You don’t have to overhaul your entire wardrobe overnight. You can start small. Maybe it’s a new scarf or a different shade of lipstick. Maybe it’s pairing something unexpected with your favorite jeans. Screaming , Girl do it!

And when you do, pay attention to how it feels. There is something so freeing about realizing you don’t have to shrink to fit someone else’s expectations. You can expand. You can reinvent. You can show up in a way that feels true to you right now, not just who you were ten or twenty years ago.

So let’s make a promise to ourselves and to each other. Let’s stop waiting for permission to wear what the FUNK we want. Let’s give ourselves credit for all the ways we’ve grown. Let’s trust that our style can grow right alongside us.

The next time you’re standing in your closet, wondering if something is “too much,” I hope you’ll remember this. Age is no reason to shrink your style. Expand it. Wear it boldly. Wear it proudly. And most of all, wear it because it makes you feel alive.

You deserve that. Today and every day. And That’s On Every FUNKY thaang!
