POV: Social Media Style vs. Real Life Style Is Lame!
I’ve been noticing something about style lately. Social media has turned it into a full-time performance, and honestly, I think it’s lame. Because the real flex isn’t having a closet full of outfits you change every few hours it’s simply getting dressed for your everyday life. Whether you’re going to work, handling things at home, or running errands, just showing up is already a style moment. #sayitlouder
Back in the day, before the internet, women wore what they loved and compliments were given no matter what you wore. It went like this: I like your dress, I like your hair bows and your shoes. Or something simple you look nice today was always giving when I was growing up.
I remember Sunday church service the first lady, the deaconess, all church woman and child came in sharp as a thumb tac, and it was considered rude not to say something nice about someone’s look. My mother made sure of that. She was quick to tell a woman “I love your dress” or “those shoes are beautiful,” and she taught me and my siblings to do the same. #memorylane
Even when I was bullied for wearing seconds and hand me downs, my mom would remind me, “It’s not the clothes that are beautiful, it’s the soul of the little girl wearing them.” That stuck with me for years. Because style used to be about joy and confidence, not comparison or labels. That’s what feels missing today soul.
Now, scroll through your phone for five minutes and you’ll be hit with a dozen “must-have” outfits. Who can even keep up at this point with the speed of social?
And if you really step outside and look around your own city, the park, the grocery store, the movies, you don’t see people walking around looking Pinterest-ready.
You see real women in real clothes doing real things in life. And let’s be honest nobody’s showing up to Walmart in a $5,000 Gucci dress with ruffles and a 6,000 feet train dragging down the aisles. #letsbehonest
I've seen celebrities peeling back the curtain these days, and we’re learning what we should have known all along: a lot of what we see is smoke and mirrors. The gowns, the designer looks, the endless “new” outfits are for red carpet, brand deals, photo ops.
Off duty, they’re just like us, slipping into jeans, tees, and sneakers. Seriously, go check it out for yourself. Honestly, that’s real life I dress up for work, going out but not everyday. #pov
Don’t come for me because I know people on the net who checks the mail box in their prom gowns. #wedontjudgejustlisten
Moral of the story: The other day I went out for coffee with two of my friends, and honestly, I was way too dressed up and it was downright embarrassing. I couldn’t even take pictures with them because they felt underdressed, while I was sitting there in an outfit that was Instagram show off ready. By the end of our coffee date, the only pictures I had were of my latte, the wall behind me, and my barista’s hand pouring the drink. #nomemoriecollected
The truth is,I’m not an influencer and I’m not changing clothes every thirty seconds, and I’m not supposed to. Dressing up is fun, but at the end of the day, the real flex is showing up for your life in whatever you decide to wear.
So no matter if it’s jeans and sneakers, a thrifted jacket, or your favorite old dress: Your style is just as worthy as anything you see online.
Here’s the real tea: I want to see the normal, mundane, cute, sassy just being you fashion because to me, all style is good style. So, go out, live your life, and Wear What The FUNK You Want!
That’s all for now, but I’ll be back. Drop your thoughts in the comments. I'd love to know what real life style looks like for you.
Until next time, Wear What The Funk You Want And That’s On Every Funky Thang!Xo, Tangie
