This is not a how to style post:) But, it's a juicy one.
Every so often, I’ll see somebody online saying women “over 40, 50, 60” shouldn’t dress grunge anymore. That style is for wild and musically overdosed teens, who like to party and have fun. And at a certain age in life that style should be tucked away.
And I always smile, because if they only knew what it feels like to finally grow into your confidence, they’d understand exactly why funky grunge hits harder in your 50s than it ever did in your teens. #realtalk
My POV: In your 50s, you’re not dressing to impress anybody. You’re not trying to keep up, fit in, or make sense to the fashion world, especially social media. Dressing funky grunge at this stage of life is personal to me. It’s about knowing myself deeply enough to wear what feels right and not what feels expected.
When I layer my skirts, rip up my denim it adds a personal touch of funk, especially when styled with chunky boots, leather jackets, long jewelry, and my ugly handmade or thrifted bags. It adds an edge I used to hide especially as a teen. For me it's not me acting young and wild It’s me giving myself permission to show up fully, without watering down the woman I’ve grown into.
Grunge fits us because we’ve earned the right to be bold.
Grunge fits us because we’ve lived enough life to mix softness and edge.
Grunge fits us because we’re finally free from everybody’s opinions. And that’s my real opinion.
Wear what the FUNK you want: especially in your 50s and beyond
Last but not least women in their 50s should dress funky grunge because it gives us:
Confidence that comes from lived experiences.
Freedom to style ourselves without rules or explanations.
Clothes that feel expressive, comfortable, and real.
A grown-woman version of the girl we used to be (Free) this time.
A boldness younger generations don’t even understand yet.
And maybe the biggest reason of all…
Because it feels good. And feeling good is reason enough for me.
At 54, I’m not chasing trends. I’m dressing myself.
And funky grunge lets me step into that confidence every single day.
Wear what you love. Wear what makes you feel alive.
