But,YES! it is about becoming that girl, creating my own style world, and finally wearing what the FUNK I want.
I know there are so many do’s and don’ts to dressing grunge. So, let me add my two cents to the mix. Although, what I am about to say has been said many times before. But, here it goes again.
Grunge? Oh yeah, I know. It has it’s own special roots. Back in the '90s, grunge exploded out of Seattle with bands like Nirvana leading the charge. (No PUN Intended) but it’s true, Kurt Cobain’s raw, unapologetic vibe wasn’t just about the music—it was a whole movement. It was about flannel shirts, ripped jeans, combat boots, and that 'I just rolled out of bed and still look cool' attitude. But here’s the thing: grunge was never meant to be polished. It was messy, authentic, and real and raw.
Fast forward to now, and here I am, remixing grunge with my own funky, fly twist. I layer dresses over jeans because why not? I love adding a leather jacket that’s seen some stories with rips chains and spikes, I love to pile on lots of jewelry like it’s an art form, and I will top it all off with boots that make me feel like a black grunge girl.
My style isn’t just about what I wear it’s how I show up for myself every day. It’s my side of rebellion, my joy, my creative playground. Although I am a 70’s baby, I have been fascinated with the grunge aesthetic my whole life. But, never wore it because it was deemed poor folk wear and dark wear was said to be worn by scary people. (that’s all I am saying right there.
And when I was younger, I worried about fitting in, about what people thought. But now? I dress for me. Funky grunge is my way of saying, 'This is who I am.' It’s mixing thrifted finds with handmade pieces, adding layers of life experiences to every outfit. It’s about comfort with an edge, softness with a punch of attitude.
So, to all the grown women out there, yes, you can rock grunge at any age. Throw on those chunky boots, layer up those necklaces, and wear that leather or denim jacket.Style is supposed to be fun, and baby, I’m just getting started.
Here’s a Little Funky Style Tip Just for You: When dressing grunge, add more jewelry. If your boots aren’t chunky enough to kick-start a conversation, they’re not chunky enough. But, remember that rule can be broken, you can wear a punk skinny heel, converse tennis shoes. Basically anything you want to FUNK up your style. I do it all
Don’t be afraid to mix patterns, clash colors, or wear that one piece you’re "not sure about" because (being true to yourself) is the real style statement. And that’s on Every FUNKY thang!
If I can do it, you can too. Your style is your voice without words, your vibe without explanation. You don’t need permission to be bold, beautiful, and uniquely you. Life’s too short to play it safe with fashion—so go ahead, wear the dress, rock the boots, pile on the rings, and let the world see you shine.
