Not So New: The Hunt for Ugly Little Treasures!

Picture Taken In Thrift Store By Tangie Bell

I haven’t been thrifting in a hot minute, but today was the day. I decided to turn it into a little relaxing hunt. Yes, shuffling through old thrifted items is a good way to find unique pieces to wear, but for me it’s also a way to slow down and enjoy the process of hunting for hidden treasures.

Some people head to the spa when they need to recharge, but I go thrifting. It’s my version of unwinding looking through other people’s old junk for fun. For me, it’s never about rushing through racks or chasing trends. It’s about wandering quietly, letting the day move at its own pace. I never walk in with something specific in mind, because honestly, I never know what will be waiting in the piles of old secondhand worn clothing and jewelry pieces. What I do know is this: if a piece is meant for me, it will be waiting on me to show up and grab it.

As for me, going Inside thrift stores, there’s a certain vibe you can’t find anywhere else. The sound of old Elvis music playing, metal hangers sliding together as I look through the racks of clothing, the occasional cough or shuffle from someone two aisles over, the faint smell of fabric aged with time. #truefeels

Honestly, it’s the nostalgia for me  and it hits differently every single time I visit my local thrift store.

I often let my fingers trail across polyester, denim, and wool, not really searching but waiting. Waiting until something catches my hand in a different way. Yes,I am waiting on that perfect feel that screams this dress or shirt is for me.

Those are  the moments I love most: the quiet surprise of finding a misfit item that feels like it belongs with me.

But, If I had to choose between clothes or accessories, I’d pick accessories every single time. On this  thrift trip, I stopped when I saw a yellow and white necklace most people would ignore. It was mid-sized and worn  the kind of piece that would turn most shoppers away. But when I held it up, I didn’t see flaws. I saw potential.

I pictured stacking it with another necklace, layering it for a concert or on a bold city walk where no one else would be wearing the same thing. That’s the kind of treasure I’m always hunting for, not new, not shiny, but something with a uniqueness already stitched into it. Maybe it was handmade. Maybe it belonged to a grandmother who finally cleared out her attic. Either way, it’s mine now.

I can spend hours shuffling through jewelry and racks of clothes that have already lived another life. There’s something grounding about it like returning to my roots. That feeling keeps me coming back, searching for those perfectly imperfect treasures.

After digging for hours, I only came out with three little items: two necklaces and one tiny phone-style brooch. Walking back to my truck with that small bag at my side, I realized today wasn’t about the find  because honestly, it rarely is. It was about slowing down, wandering without a plan, and letting the “ugly little treasures” find me.

That’s my kind of shopping  the kind that doesn’t need polish or perfection, just a little time and a little imagination.

As I get older, my style is evolving in ways I truly love. Now, when I shop, I’m looking for pieces I can mix into the wardrobe I already own. I want clothes I can rewear, rework, and restyle over and over again. That’s the new vibe for my style  wearing what the FUNK I want. And that’s on every funky thang.

So tell me, what are your favorite finds at the moment?

See ya in the next post,
xo Tangie
