I stopped saving my funky odd pieces for special occasions and started wearing them on ordinary days.
I am just a woman who likes to create wearable art that sometimes becomes my outfit of the day. Honestly, being a bag maker means I don’t just throw clothes on and run out the door anymore. ( I mean I can) But, now I think about what I’m wearing and how it fits into my day, where I’m going, and how I want to feel while I’m at said place. Most days, I’m not dressing for anything major like an event or a family gathering. Now that I’m in my fifties I realize I like dressing cute even if going to the grocery store. I don’t have to put on anything revolutionary, I just want to feel good in what I am wearing at that moment. That is why I focus so heavily on my bags and accessories. It’s a complete game changer for me. So, today I am headed to Shreveport, Louisiana, my hometown. Ya’ll we talking coffee and lots of chatter (meaning talking with everyone I know and see.)
We Home Now!
And honestly, you can’t go home and not stop by the places where locals actually hang. As soon as my husband and I pulled into the city, we went straight downtown to grab coffee at Rhino Coffee and see what felt familiar and what felt new. You can see more on Tangie Bell.
Anywho, we were in town visiting my mother and father-in-law, so time was short. One of those trips where you’re trying to be present, visit family, and still sneak in a little space for yourself. I managed to do both. I spent time with them and squeezed in a bit of walking around downtown, just taking in the city and the weird little things I forgot I missed about being home.
That’s where this outfit comes in.
I wore one of my long graphic dresses because that’s usually where I feel most like myself. I like clothes that move with me and don’t feel stiff or overly planned. I added my leather jacket because it pulls everything together without making it feel dressed up. I paired all that with my thrifted black boots, because I knew I’d be a lot of walking, and comfort matters when you’re moving through the day instead of posing for it. (Although, I did do a lot of posing.
And then there was the clothespin denim bag. Yes, my signature bag brings all the stares and whispers. If you want to be seen, this bag is a hit with your funky vibes. Ha:)
The clothespin bag has weight and texture, and when you carry it, it naturally becomes part of your outfit and look.
Standing in line at Rhino coffee I got so many compliments, until I l almost gave my bag away. But, mine is the original prototype. Nonetheless, I wore it just for show and it worked because its the perfect performance bag and no one I know has one.
It works for coffee runs, casual dates, walking around a city you love, and those in-between moments that don’t get labeled but end up meaning the most. I didn’t dress for brunch or date night specifically. I dressed for my day, and that’s the difference.
Being home made me think about how style carries memory and that is engraved into the clothespin bag. Because, what we wear becomes part of where we’ve been. I wasn’t trying to impress anyone, nor was I dressing for a photo. I was dressed for my life in that moment, moving between family visits, coffee, and familiar streets. I made my bag and outfit fit the day I wanted to have.
That’s the heart of Wear What The FUNK You Want for me.
I don’t save my funky art pieces for special occasions anymore. I wear them when I’m visiting family, I wear them when I’m grabbing coffee, I wear them when I’m short on time but still want to look funky and fly.
The clothespin bag fit right into that space of familiar but unexpected. It’s a little odd a little nostalgic mixed with artsy funk and flair .
