Throwback Tuesday: The DIY Earrings That Changed The Way I Look At Style

Oh hey friend,

Since it’s Throwback Tuesday, I decided to pull up an old post I wrote about seven years ago from back when I was a pre-colored blonde headed gal trying to figure out my style one funky accessory at a time.

Looking back at these pictures made me smile because, honestly, this was around the time I started realizing that style did not have to be this big complicated performance.

Somewhere along the way, getting dressed became a full-time job on the internet. Everybody suddenly needed an aesthetic, a label, a fashion category, a color palette, and a core just to leave the house. Including myself :)

One minute you liked boho, the next minute you were supposed to be luxury. Child, I couldn’t keep up if I tried. Honestly, it became a mix up of designer styles honestly, rather than mixing and matching personal style.

And truth be told, I never really wanted to be nether.

I’m just a regular degular woman who likes clothes, funky accessories, layered pieces, and little creative moments that make me feel good when I look in the mirror. That’s it and that’s all. I never knew I had to pick a side in fashion just to enjoy getting dressed. It was subconscious and it stemmed from not looking at social media with a grain of salt. Yes, I was being influenced in picking a side from the fashion/ style rules.

That pressure honestly started taking the fun out of style for me.

Social media can make you feel like if you’re not following trends, buying expensive things, or dressing like everybody else, then somehow you’re behind. But what I’ve learned over time is this: the women who stand out the most are usually the ones who stopped trying so hard to fit in.

That’s really where Wear What The FUNK You Want came from.

It came from wanting to enjoy style again without needing over thinking wearing wide legs pants with a ripped t-shirt and sandals.

It came from wanting to create without worrying if something was trending.

And it definitely came from moments like this one.

I remember posting these DIY earrings years ago, all excited because I thought they were cute and different. One of the very first comments I got said, “Those are cute, but they’re not on trend.”

Whew.

That little comment stayed with me for a minute because it made me realize how deeply people attach style to approval. As if something can only be beautiful if everybody else is wearing it too.

Meanwhile, I was over here just happy I made some earrings from craft store pieces and jump rings.

That was the moment I realized I couldn’t build my creativity around trends because trends change every five business days. What’s in today becomes old news tomorrow according to the internet. I don’t have the energy for all that.

So I kept showing up anyway. and honestly, I’m glad I did.

Because these little earrings reminded me that style can be simple. Sometimes all it takes is one accessory to completely change how you feel in an outfit you already own.

That’s why I always say accessories are powerful.A bold lip can change your mood, a funky ring can change your vibe, and a pair of earrings can completely change the vibe of an outfit you wore yesterday.

No I am not exaggerating.:)

These DIY earrings became one of those little reminders that personal style is not always about buying more, sometimes it’s about looking at ordinary things differently.

That’s why I still love DIY culture, rewearing outfits, thrifted finds, and creative projects. I love walking through craft stores looking at random pieces thinking, “What can I turn this into?”

That’s fun to me and that’s how I think style should be.

And honestly, at this stage in my life, I want more fun wrapped around my style.

The funny part is these earrings were incredibly easy to make. I found the macramé style presets at Hobby Lobby in the jewelry section and immediately saw potential. All I did was remove them from the paper backing, add jump rings, attach earring hooks, and boom, girl,  instant statement earrings.

They were simple, affordable and cute.
And most importantly… me.

And, that's what I want women to understand about style. You do not have to become a fashion influencer to express yourself. You do not need expensive clothing to look funky and fly. And you definitely do not need permission to wear something that makes you happy.

Some women are polished dressers, some women are artistic dressers, some women love neutrals, and some women love color explosions.

And honestly,  all of it counts.

No two women will ever wear something exactly the same anyway. One woman might inspire another, but there will always be something uniquely hers mixed into it. That’s the beauty of personal style.

The older I get, the more I realize I’m not dressing for other folk anymore. I’m dressing for myself. I’m dressing because life is short and I still enjoy creativity. I’m dressing because I spent too many years worrying about fitting in when I was always meant to stand out a little differently.

And maybe that’s the real lesson in all of this.

Sometimes one tiny creative moment can shift your whole perspective.

One pair of earrings, one bold lipstick, one funky outfit or one decision to stop hiding.

2026 is teaching me how to fully be myself even when people don’t understand it. And honestly, I’m finally okay with that.

So for the rest of this year, I plan on living loudly, creatively, and fully in color because people will love you one minute and misunderstand you the next anyway. You might as well enjoy your life while you’re here.

So yes… live and dress beyond the moon, the stars, and everybody else’s opinions.

That’s my style story and I’m sticking to it.

And remember friend, no matter what life looks like right now, always root for yourself.

Now tell me the truth: Do you like my DIY earrings?
