One of my favorite things to do with the youth in my city is to share how I can make earrings out of scraps such as newspapers, magazines, and old recycled paper. Seriously, a single person can be sitting on a gold mine with just a few pieces of paper and create something wearable. Yes, handmaking stuff for your personal style can't be copied because no two pieces will be the same. And I know so many of my friends who want to create something different. I know I do. When, I go out I never want to show up looking like someone else. #sorrynotsorry
So, designing my own wearable art is a way I can show off my uniqueness. Now, I don't usually show many DIY projects on here but I think having your own outlet is great for style. Hence: Wear What The FUNK You Want even if you create it yourself.
Honestly, I can spend hours at the craft store, flea markets, and jewelry shows looking for scraps, metals, paper. I will reuse, recycle, repurpose to make earrings for me to wear.
About a week ago, I attended a project fair. This event was about finding your inner doodle. You know that one thing you like to dibble and dabble with that no one would understand but you and the good Lord.
Yes, that one.
Most people I meet at events think they need money to make something at craft events. I am always eager to share and show people how to make something with little or no money.
When I was a kid, I would take the local newspaper, ball it up, and seal it with Elmer's glue. So, I could make my own earrings to wear to school. Then I started taking regular glue sticking it on cardboards I cut from moving boxes.
Fast forward to today, we have E-600 glue and Mod Podge glue that is designed to make all my jewelry pieces stick together.
To make Mod Podge earrings, I had to use wood pieces, earring backs, and paintbrushes.
I also grabbed aluminum foil to catch the glue as it will waste, and I cut out all the paper I wanted to use on my project.
This was a simple and easy DIY project, and I will be making hundreds more over the next 6 months.
First, I like to scrunch up my foil to make a little bowl to pour the Mod Podge into. Then I choose the wooden pieces I would like to work with. I am going for a big circle style and look.
Then I take a safety pin, place in the center of my circle so I can apply the sticky glue. I have to spread it fast because Mod Podge gets sticky quickly, and I need to use the paper before it dries.
Then I placed my desired paper on top and pressed as hard as possible to remove any unwanted bubbles underneath the paper.
While that part of my project dried, I proceeded to mix up my resin. This will give my earrings that have a clear dome effect.
I just mix two parts of resin, then I apply onto my wood magazine earrings, allow to dry over night.
The last step is adding the earring backs with any glue adhesive of choice.
I am super excited about the way they turned out, and I will be wearing them to our next meet-up.
I also made a few oval pieces and square one to wear out and about on the town. Yep, these may not be for everyone, but they are easy and fun to make. Oh, and not to mention, they can be sold on Etsy, eBay, and Amazon, to name a few places.
There you have my quick recycled earrings made out of magazines.
Would you wear these?
P.S This post is for personal use to make and wear. Do your research if you make these for resell, copyright on images may get your stuff shut down in the future.
Until Next Time Wear What The FUNK You Want!
